The church building is located at 606 N. 5th Street, between Shelby and Hart Streets in downtown Vincennes. Look for our directional signs (at left) on Sixth Street and Hart Street.
Enter our paved parking lot from Hart St. Parking is also available along the streets of 5th, 4th, and Shelby Streets (and along Hart Street on Sunday mornings only). Handicap spaces available. Overflow parking is available across Hart Street (PACE Building).
Our entryways have ramps, and there is ramp access to the church sanctuary from Memorial Hall. There are several handicap parking spaces located close to all entrances with ushers standing by if you require assistance. Our main entrance on Fifth St. has been completely renovated and is accessible to all. We also have our own wheelchairs and walkers for anyone who needs them while at church. During worship services, we offer Phonic Ears Hearing Devices.
While we eagerly embrace modern music and theology, our 10:30 service is a traditional church service. It includes weekly singing of The Doxology and The Gloria Patri, recitation of the Lord’s Prayer (KJV), NRSV Bible liturgy, responsive readings & unison prayers, music performances (some contemporary), Children’s Time, and hymns from the Chalice Hymnal.
Look for tall, laminated cards in the back of every pew for information that will help visitors with regular parts of our Worship Service.
Please fill out the information about yourself and your family as the Fellowship Pad makes its way down your pew. Take a moment to meet the people sitting on either side of you.
You’re encouraged to ask for Afghans, Children’s Bulletins, Back Supports, Blankets, and Phonic Ears Hearing Devices.
Please use the pink cards provided in the pews and pass them to the outer aisles for collection before the first hymn. These will be read aloud in Pastoral Prayer during the service and may be as general as you wish.
St. John’s offers wireless internet to its members. Contact the office for the password. In consideration of your fellow worshippers, please silence or turn off all electronic devices (including cell phones) before the worship service begins.
Located near the Sanctuary entrance (by the 5th St. Entrance). Be sure to browse the selection of devotional booklets and informational brochures about our denomination, our church, and our groups.
If you would like an audiotape or CD of our Sunday Worship Service, please ask an usher for one, or call the church office. They are available on the sound booth at the back of the sanctuary (several previous weeks also). You may also stream or download mp3 versions of our sermons on this website (click “Sermon Downloads” under “Resources” to find the list (archived back to Aug. 2019).
We offer two daily devotional magazines – The Upper Room and These Days (Presbyterian / UCC).
The church office is open Monday – Friday (closed 1 hour for lunch). We are closed on most major holidays.
St. John’s United Church of Christ has an open door policy for the surrounding community. We have a wonderful event hall and kitchen that is available for rent. If you would like to hold a meeting, special event or wedding at St. John’s, please contact the church office at (812) 882-2720 for more information.
Our Nursery, located next to the Church Office, is supervised from 9:00am to 12:00pm on Sundays by Darcie Bahr, a fully-qualified staff person who is experienced in teaching and child care, assisted by volunteers from the congregation. We have a Safe Child Policy that volunteers must sign.
St. John’s UCC celebrates the Sacrament of Holy Communion the first Sunday of every month. The congregation is served in the pews and holds the sacraments to partake together. We do not require membership if you would like to take Communion. We also offer communion to hospital patients and those at home without the ability to come to church. Please contact the Church Office if you would like to have communion.
